Ingredients

1 lb spicy Italian sausage, casing removed

1 medium onion, thinly sliced

1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced

1 yellow bell pepper, thinly sliced

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 can (15 oz) crushed tomatoes

1 tbsp olive oil

1 tsp Italian seasoning

1/2 tsp red pepper flakes (adjust based on heat preference)

Salt and black pepper to taste

1 tbsp fresh basil, chopped (for garnishing)

1 lb pizza dough (store-bought or homemade)

2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Begin by preheating your oven to 425°F (220°C) so that it’s hot and ready for baking.

Cook the Sausage: In a large skillet over medium heat, pour in the olive oil and allow it to heat briefly. Add the spicy Italian sausage, using a wooden spoon to break it into smaller pieces. Cook it for about 5-7 minutes, until well-browned and cooked through. Once done, transfer the sausage to a plate and set aside.

Sauté the Vegetables: In the same skillet, add the sliced onions and both bell peppers. Sauté these for around 5-6 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables are soft and starting to caramelize. Add the minced garlic to the skillet and sauté for an additional minute until you can smell its aroma.

Combine Ingredients: Return the browned sausage to the skillet with the sautéed vegetables. Stir in the crushed tomatoes, Italian seasoning, red pepper flakes, and season with salt and black pepper to taste. Let this mixture simmer on low heat for about 5 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together beautifully.

Prepare the Dough: While the sausage and pepper mixture is simmering, roll out the pizza dough on a lightly floured surface or directly onto a greased baking dish. Press it down firmly to ensure it covers the bottom and slightly comes up along the sides of the dish.

Layer the Pizza Bake: Pour the sausage and pepper mixture evenly over the pizza dough, making sure it’s well-distributed. Then, top generously with shredded mozzarella cheese followed by a sprinkling of grated Parmesan cheese.

Bake: Carefully place the baking dish in your preheated oven. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbling and golden brown and the crust is fully cooked and crisp.

Garnish and Serve: After baking, remove the pizza bake from the oven and allow it to cool for a few minutes. Garnish generously with freshly chopped basil for added flavor and color. Slice into squares and enjoy serving hot.
