Ingredients

1 French baguette (or Italian bread)

½ cup unsalted butter, softened to room temperature

1 whole head of garlic, roasted

2 tablespoons fresh parsley, finely chopped

1 tablespoon fresh basil, finely chopped

1 tablespoon fresh oregano, finely chopped

½ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional, for a bit of heat)

1 teaspoon kosher salt

½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese (optional, for a cheesy touch)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Set your oven to 375°F (190°C) to get it ready for baking.

Prepare the Garlic: To roast the garlic, start by slicing off the top of the entire head to expose the cloves. Drizzle with a teaspoon of olive oil, wrap it snugly in aluminum foil, and bake it in the oven for about 30-35 minutes, or until the cloves are soft and caramelized. Once cooled, gently squeeze the roasted cloves out of their skins and into a mixing bowl.

Mix the Spread: In a medium mixing bowl, blend the softened butter with the roasted garlic using a fork or spatula until smooth. Add in the chopped parsley, basil, oregano, red pepper flakes (if chosen), kosher salt, and black pepper. Thoroughly mix all the ingredients until they form a creamy herb-infused spread.

Slice the Bread: Carefully cut the baguette in half lengthwise. Optionally, you can slice each half into smaller pieces, but be sure not to cut all the way through to keep the halves connected.

Spread the Mixture: Use a butter knife or spatula to generously spread the garlic herb butter mixture over both cut sides of the baguette. If you’re opting for a cheesy enhancement, sprinkle the grated Parmesan cheese evenly over the buttered surfaces.

Wrap and Bake: Wrap the two halves of the baguette in aluminum foil to keep them moist during baking. Place the wrapped bread on a baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes.

Add a Crisp: For a delightful crispy crust, carefully unwrap the foil for the final 5 minutes of baking. If you’ve added Parmesan cheese, switch your oven to broil for an extra 2-3 minutes, watching closely until the cheese is bubbly and golden.

Serve: Once the baking time is complete, remove the garlic bread from the oven and let it cool for a minute. Slice into portions as desired, and serve warm. For an extra flair, garnish with a scattering of additional chopped fresh herbs.
