Ingredients

For the Dough:

4 cups all-purpose flour

1/4 cup granulated sugar

1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast

1 cup whole milk, warmed to about 110°F (43°C)

1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled

2 large eggs, at room temperature

1 tsp vanilla extract

1/2 tsp salt

For the Brown Butter Filling:

1/2 cup unsalted butter, browned

1 cup packed brown sugar

2 tbsp ground cinnamon

1/4 tsp ground nutmeg (optional)

For the Maple Cream Cheese Frosting:

4 oz cream cheese, softened to room temperature

1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened

1/2 cup powdered sugar

2 tbsp pure maple syrup

1 tsp vanilla extract

A pinch of salt

Instructions

Make the Dough: In a small bowl, mix the warmed milk with the active dry yeast and let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes frothy. Meanwhile, in a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, and salt. Add the melted butter, eggs, vanilla extract, and the yeast mixture to the dry ingredients. Stir and mix until a cohesive dough forms.

Knead the Dough: Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead it for approximately 5-7 minutes until it is smooth and elastic. Place the kneaded dough into a greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and allow it to rise in a warm environment for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.

Prepare the Brown Butter Filling: In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the unsalted butter. Continue cooking it, swirling occasionally, until it turns golden brown and emits a nutty aroma, usually about 5-7 minutes. Remove from the heat and let it cool slightly. In a separate bowl, mix together the brown sugar, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg (if using), and the browned butter until fully combined.

Roll Out the Dough: After the dough has risen, gently punch it down to release the air, then transfer it to a floured work surface. Roll the dough into a large rectangle approximately 16x20 inches wide and about 1/4 inch thick.

Spread the Filling: Evenly distribute the prepared brown butter filling over the entire surface of the rolled-out dough, making sure to leave about an inch margin along the edges.

Roll the Dough: From one long edge, carefully roll the dough into a tight log, pinching the seam to seal it securely. Using a sharp knife or a dental floss method, cut the log into 12 equal pieces.

Second Rise: Arrange the cut rolls in a greased 9x13 inch baking dish or two round cake pans. Cover them with a cloth and let them rise again for about 30-45 minutes, until they are puffed and nearly doubled.

Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) during the last few minutes of rising.

Bake the Rolls: Bake the cinnamon rolls in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until they are a beautiful golden brown. Remove them from the oven and let them cool slightly in the pan.

Make the Maple Cream Cheese Frosting: In a mixing bowl, beat the softened cream cheese and butter together until smooth and creamy. Gradually add the powdered sugar, then mix in the maple syrup, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt until the frosting reaches a fluffy consistency.

Frost and Serve: While the rolls are still warm, generously spread the maple cream cheese frosting over the top. For an extra touch, drizzle additional maple syrup over the frosted rolls.

Enjoy! Serve warm and indulge in the delightful flavors of Maple Brown Butter Cinnamon Rolls!
