Ingredients

12 oz ziti pasta

1 lb ground beef or Italian sausage

1 small onion, diced

3 cloves garlic, minced

28 oz can crushed tomatoes

15 oz container ricotta cheese

2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese, divided

1 cup grated Parmesan cheese

1 large egg

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1 teaspoon dried basil

Salt and pepper, to taste

Fresh basil leaves for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Begin by preheating your oven to 375°F (190°C) so it’s ready for your ziti once assembled.

Cook the Pasta: In a large pot, bring salted water to a rolling boil. Add the ziti pasta and cook according to the package instructions until al dente, usually around 8-10 minutes. Drain the pasta and set it aside in a colander.

Prepare the Meat Sauce: In a large skillet, pour in a tablespoon of olive oil and heat it over medium heat. Add the diced onion to the skillet and sauté for about 5 minutes, or until the onion has turned translucent. Stir in the minced garlic and then add the ground beef (or Italian sausage). Cook until the meat is thoroughly browned and cooked through, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon as it cooks.

Add Tomatoes and Seasoning: Once the meat is browned, pour in the crushed tomatoes. Stir in the dried oregano, dried basil, and season with salt and pepper to your taste. Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer gently for about 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to combine beautifully.

Mix the Cheese Filling: In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together the ricotta cheese, 1 cup of the shredded mozzarella cheese, grated Parmesan cheese, egg, and a small pinch of salt and pepper. Mix thoroughly until the mixture is well blended and creamy.

Combine Pasta and Sauce: In a large mixing bowl, combine the drained ziti with the prepared meat sauce. Gently toss the pasta with the sauce until each piece is coated evenly.

Layer the Baked Ziti: Take a large baking dish and spread half of the ziti mixture across the bottom. Scoop half of the ricotta mixture over the ziti and gently spread it out. Top this layer with half of the remaining mozzarella cheese. Repeat the layering process with the rest of the ziti, ricotta mixture, and mozzarella.

Bake: Cover the baking dish tightly with aluminum foil and place it in the preheated oven. Bake for 25 minutes. After this initial baking period, remove the foil carefully and continue baking for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbling and golden brown.

Garnish and Serve: Once out of the oven, let your baked ziti cool for about 10 minutes to set. If desired, garnish with fresh basil leaves for a pop of color and flavor. Serve hot and enjoy every cheesy bite!
