Ingredients

4 large sweet apples (like Honeycrisp or Fuji), cored and sliced

1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

2 cups crusty bread, cubed

1/2 cup walnuts, chopped

1/4 cup brown sugar

1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

1 tablespoon lemon juice

2 cups milk

3 large eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Salt and pepper to taste

Fresh parsley, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9x13 inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray.

In a sizable bowl, mix the sliced apples with the lemon juice, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and a small amount of salt and pepper. Toss thoroughly to coat the apples evenly.

Place half of the cubed bread at the base of the prepared baking dish. Layer half of the seasoned apple mixture over the bread. Top with half of the cheddar and Parmesan cheeses.

Follow by adding the remaining cubed bread. Then layer the rest of the apple mixture and sprinkle the remaining cheeses on top. Finish with a handful of chopped walnuts.

In another bowl, whisk together the milk, eggs, and vanilla extract. Drizzle this mixture uniformly over the layered casserole, ensuring it seeps into the bread and apples.

Gently press down on the layers with a spatula to help the liquid absorb.

Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes.

After 30 minutes, take off the foil and continue baking for another 15-20 minutes, or until the top is golden and bubbling.

Let the casserole cool for a few minutes, and if desired, garnish with fresh parsley. Serve warm and savor this delightful fall-inspired dish!
